We’re hiring for the growing season of 2025!
Do you have expertise, experience and interest in self-sufficiency, regenerative agriculture and permaculture? Then you can be our new permaculture gardener/farm employee!
(This is a paid position for already acquired skills. If you are unskilled, keep an eye open for courses or consider applying for a volunteer position).
We are looking for a person who has
- relevant experience with permaculture (PDC is a plus) and regenerative agriculture and the cultivation methods used. You should be familiar with terms such as no dig, swales and hugelbeds, as well as know how to make compost. Permaculture is the cornerstone of everything we do on the farm and knowledge in this field is a must.
- relevant experience in vegetable cultivation and know concepts such as companion planting, statification and succession planting, and know common plant diseases and how to avoid or treat them naturally
- relevant experience with maintenance and planting of green areas and know concepts and methods such as forest garden, vermiculture, rotational grazing, propagation, coppicing etc.
- Market garden experience is a plus. Although the vegetable garden is currently mostly for own use, it is not a small kitchen garden, but aproximately 0,5 hectares all together. Here we grow food for a whole year and that requires a lot of organisation
- You need to have a class B driver's license
- You need to be organized, take initiative and see things that need to be done and you need to like to work outside in all kinds of weather.
Your main work tasks
- be responsible for all or parts of the vegetable growing process, from planning to sowing to harvesting
- be responsible for outdoor areas and green areas; cultivation/planting of flowers, fruit trees and berry bushes, weeding and grass cutting
- Forestry; thinning forests and planting new trees
- Landscape planning; make ponds and paths etc
- Contribute to the evaluation and progress of the farm and the vision.
The tasks may also include (depends on competence):
- Animal husbandry and care
- Maintenance
- Carpentry/construction
- Washing/organising/fixing/dump runs
- Making farm produce for markets
- Website/social media/digital competence
- Farm sitting
- Wood chopping/stacking
- Sheep shearing/lambing
- Plan courses/extra help during courses.
Info
The job starts in April, and you preferably work the whole season until October, but it is also possible to work for a few months. It’s about 4 hours of gardening work every day, but can definitely be more if you want more tasks. We can offer very flexible working hours; there are good opportunities to combine the farm job with an online job or studies, work two weeks on and one week off, commute and work Mon-Fri or similar setup (there is no need to be here 24/7 and we will create a work plan that works for all parties before commencement). It is also possible to live on the farm where the expenses for board and lodging are deducted from salary. We have an RV with electricity, kitchen and woodstove and outdoor compost toilet overlooking a pond.
It’s hourly paid (salary depends on competence and experience).
About us
We are Kieran and Sara, a Canadian/Norwegian couple in their mid-thirties and we have been running Alfheim farm since autumn 2020. We live 1km up in the forest from Matrand, a small town 20 minutes south of Kongsvinger (1h40 from Oslo, Norway). As of now, we are two permanent residents, along with 5 sheep (but we might get lambs in the spring!), 30 ducks and chickens and 3 cats, but friends and semi-permanent residents, workers and visitors come and go a lot during the season. Our vision is to become as self-sufficient as possible and learn as many skills as possible in addition to regenerating the 16 hectares of forest we have been lucky enough to care for. Eventually we will hold courses in permaculture and self-sufficiency, sell more farm products and have a CSA or similar. We also have many interests outside of farming such as music (Kieran plays guitar and Sara piano), archery, sewing/making clothes, storytelling, anime, cooking, reading books and watching movies, making soap, skin care and other farm products and learning wilderness skills. We have had 30+ volunteers from WWOOF for the past couple of years, but are now looking to hire someone to delegate more responsibilities. Since life on a farm is a close-knit community, it is important to us that the social aspect also fits. Feel free to send us information about who you are outside of work too!
Email us your CV and a short motivation letter to alfheimfarm@gmail.com, or any other questions you have. We look forward to hearing from you!
